Poor, Abandoned, and usually Immigrant children who hawked newspaper on the street of New York City and other cities.
Although the majority of newsies was boys, there were many girls as well. They were approximately 10,000 children living on the street of New York City. The only thing that helped them staying alive and not dying of starvation was selling newspapers which was the only source of income. Newsies bought 100 papers from the publisher for about 65 cents. The profit that they saw if they sold every paper for the day was approximately 30 cents.
Their typical clothes that they wore that time were outer coats, knee pants, long black stockings and caps whereas girls wore long and flare dresses, long black stockings and outer coats. The reason of selecting this topic and incorporate it into my collection was to tell the story of their lives. And how life was so unfair, how the struggle was real.
